Detailed design plans for the multi-million pound transformation of Urmston shopping centre were given the go ahead last week by Trafford Council Planning Committee.

Ask Developments, which was selected by the Council to create a scheme which will spearhead the regeneration of Urmston, received detailed planning approval for the development’s finer details.

The scheme, which will provide 140,000 sq ft of retail and leisure space – including a Sainsbury’s supermarket, as well as a new library and 144 apartments, will generate a thriving retail centre, enhanced community facilities and create new jobs for local people.

Work is already underway on Phase 1 of the project, with demolition of the former Council Offices and adjoining shop units now completed.   Further demolition works and construction of the new centre is due to start this autumn once vacant possession of the remaining units has been obtained.

Julie Moorhouse, Development Executive at Ask Developments said: “This is an exciting scheme and received a unanimous positive decision at the Planning Committee. Ask Developments firmly believes that the scheme is fitting for the town and the people of Urmston and Trafford, and we are confident that we have met the challenge of providing an exciting contemporary, sustainable and high quality development that meets the aspirations of both.

Cllr Stephanie Poole, Executive Councillor at Trafford Council said, “We have reached another important stage in the regeneration of Urmston town centre and are looking forward to continuing the work to develop a shopping centre that will create real opportunities for business and employment, attract investment across the whole town and act as an important focus for the local community.”

The first phase which includes the supermarket, car park and library should be completed by early 2009.
