Following discussions with Urmston traders, the Urmston Partnership and residents and in the public interest, Ask Developments and Trafford Council have agreed to temporarily re-open the car park adjacent to the Police Station car park over the Christmas period.

This will re-open in time for shoppers this Saturday, 8th December, as a short stay car park with a two-hour limited waiting period. This can only be accessed via Park Road North off Moorside Road and not via Sumner Way. There will be pedestrian access from and to this temporary car park past the police station on Sumner Way.

Ask and the Council has worked extremely hard with Carillion to re-arrange the layout and use of the site as well as the order of work and have carefully considered how various parts of the site are currently used. Significant alterations have been made to allow them to reopen the car park until Monday January 7th 2008.

Julie Moorhouse, Development Executive for Ask, said: “Ask is a conscientious developer and we have listened carefully to concerns of the local traders and residents in the run-up to Christmas. Both Ask and the Council wanted to work with the local community to find a solution, and although there is an additional cost incurred in temporarily reopening the car park, we know that the weeks running up to Christmas are an important time for local business and we have done our best to accommodate everyone.”

Trafford Council’s Executive Member Cllr Ken Bullman, said: “After a lot of consideration from Ask, Carillion and the Council, the re-opening of the car park will give shoppers the opportunity to park in the car park in the run-up to Christmas and shortly afterwards. But we must be mindful to press on with the development and make sure that we deliver the scheme in the allotted time scale. In order to do this, the car park will need to close again on January 7th.”

Bernard Murray, Chairman of the Urmston Partnership, said: “The Partnership is delighted that we have been able to work with Ask and the Council to achieve extra temporary parking for Christmas shopping while at the same time not delaying progress on construction work.”

The re-opening of the car park is in addition to all the other car parking spaces still available in the town centre – full details of which are on the askabouturmston website and in leaflets available in Urmston Library.
