Manchester City Council has chosen Ask Developments' First Street scheme in the city for its 140,000 sq ft temporary relocation while the town hall complex is refurbished. The Council originally chose Allied London's Spinningfields, but pulled out saying it could get a better deal elsewhere. The Council will relocate temporarily to the Number One building within the First Street development. The deal means that the £175m three year refurbishment of the town hall complex - designed to maintain the historic buildings and improve services - will move forwards. It includes improvements to the Town Hall extension, the Central Library and St Peter's Square. The Council's 1,400 staff will occupy 140,000 sq ft of the building from January 2010 until the end of December 2012. The building has a further 40,000 sq ft available for occupation. John Hughes, Director at Ask Developments, said: "We are delighted with this decision, which is extremely positive news for First Street. The Number One building is the first phase of this major redevelopment which is set to transform this important area of the city centre". The First Street scheme will span 20 acres and include 1.8m sq ft of offices, 1,500 homes and 350,000 sq ft of retail and leisure space as well as the first new pedestrianised thoroughfare in the city centre for decades. GVA Grimley advised the Council. Savills and CB Richard Ellis are letting agents for First Street.
