Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council has approved plans for a new college at Ask Developments' St Petersfield scheme in Ashton-under-Lyne. The new offering, part of Tameside College, is dubbed a ‘Knowledge Mill' – an enterprise and training resource which will offer business courses for up-and-coming entrepreneurs in the borough and a place where individuals and companies can develop ideas in a business creation unit. When finished, the 9,245 sq ft mill will complete the ‘circus' area of the St Petersfield masterplan. Designed by Aedas Architects, the building will cover three floors and will provide teaching spaces, staff offices and a cafe with an outdoor seating area. Julian Stott, development executive at Ask Developments, said: “As well as working with budding entrepreneurs to provide them with the skills needed to move their business forward, it will also ensure new and existing companies have the option to stay within Tameside rather relocating elsewhere.” Jenny Worsdale, vice principal at Tameside College, said: “Over the next few months we are looking forward to watching the centre grow into a vibrant focus for new businesses and established ones looking to enhance the skills of their employees locally.” The St Petersfield development will provide 280,000 sq ft of office space with retail and leisure amenity facilities totalling 400,000 sq ft. The developer claims the finished scheme will have the capacity to sustain almost 2,000 jobs and will have attracted private sector capital investment of more than £42m. The scheme is being delivered through a £14.5m public/private sector partnership.
