This 20-acre scheme will extend the heart of Manchester city – and become a new international gateway to the city centre.
First Street is set to become one of the most significant development schemes in Manchester City Centre and is already establishing the development as a credible business location following the completion of Number One - a 180,000 sq ft Grade A office building completed in March 2009.
It has recently been announced that Jacobs, one of the world's largest and most diverse providers of technical, professional and construction services, has entered into a new 10 year lease agreement to take 23,526 sq ft, and plans to take occupation in autumn 2014. Jacobs is now joined by Auto Trader, who have brought their 600 strong team into 60,000 sq ft of offices, spread over two and a half floors, on a 15 year lease, and Ford Credit Europe who will officially open for business in October 2014.
The first phase of public realm was completed in summer 2010 which includes five stunning statues positioned down First Street leading into the newly created Southern Square, measuring a huge 2,100 sq m. This project has been part funded by the European Union.
First Street North is now under construction the anchor of which is the £25m venue for HOME, a unique multi-artform centre which is being brought forward for the merged Cornerhouse and Library Theatre Company. Further information is available on their interim website here. Also under construction as part of this phase of development is a 208 bedroom four star hotel which will be operated by Melia International Hotels for their Innside brand; a 700 space multi-storey car park pre let to Q-Park; 9 food and beverage units and extensive public realm. In addition, the £13m Vita Student development completed in early September 2014, and the 279 apartments are now fully let.
This will help to transform people's perception of this area of the city centre establishing it as a new leisure and retailing destination together with dedicated outdoor performance space and new public square.
Exceptional transport links together with a rich mix of bars, restaurants and retail outlets will combine to create a distinctive sense of place and vibrancy on weekends, weekdays and evenings.
First Street will also create a new commercial heart for the city, delivering up to 1 million sq ft of sustainable, campus style office buildings bringing new employment opportunities to Manchester. These commercial offices will be robust, flexible and generously proportioned, appealing to a wide range of occupiers seeking the benefits of a central and highly accessible location but with headline rents substantially lower than the prime central business district.
