First Street is one of the most signifcant schemes in Manchester City Centre and the first phase is the redevelopment of the former BT building now called Number One First Street. The 180,000 sq ft Grade A offices completed in March 2009 and the building has just been awarded the BREEAM Post Construction certificate of "Excellent". Number One First Street is the first office building in the North West to achieve this level of accrediation and only the 7th in the country. Manchester City Council has relocated into 140,000 sq ft at Number One in order for the town hall extension works to take place over the next three years. They were joined by Amaze PLC who relocated into 16,500 sq ft in November 2010.
The first phase of public realm was completed in summer 2010 which includes five stunning statues positioned down First Street leading into the newly created Southern Square, measuring a huge 2,100 sq m.
The recent announcement regarding the creation of a striking new home for Cornerhouse and the Library Theatre Company at First Street will transform people's perception of this area of the city centre and establish a new lesiure and retailing development together with world class outdoor performance space and new public square.
Exceptional transport links together with a rich mix of bars, restaurants and retail outlets will combine to create a distinctive sense of place and vibrancy on weekends, weekdays and evenings.
